What happened at Camp Lejeune?

Camp Lejeune is a large military base located on the coast of North Carolina, opened in 1942.

The base is supplied by eight water treatment plants. Between 1953 - 1987 two of those plants, the Tarawa Terrace and Hadnot Point water treatment plants, contained finished drinking water contaminated with several volatile organic compounds (VOCs). The VOCs found in the water supply can cause a number of cancers, birth defects and other serious health complications.

It was not until 1982 that the Marine Corps discovered the toxic water supply. During the nearly 40 years that the water at Camp Lejeune was contaminated, as many as one million military service members, family members of service members and civilian staff were exposed to the dangerous chemicals. In some cases, the toxic compounds were present at a concentration of well over 3,000 times the accepted standard.

The primary contaminant found in the Tarawa Terrace water supply was perchloroethylene (PCE) — a chemical commonly used for dry cleaning. An off-base dry cleaning company caused the contamination by improperly disposing of their waste.

The Hadnot Point water primarily contained trichloroethylene (TCE) — an industrial solvent. This contamination was due to storage tank leaks and spills in the area.

What chemicals were in the water supply?

The Agency for Toxic Substances and Disease Registry investigated the contaminated water at Camp Lejeune and discovered extremely high levels of several dangerous carcinogens. Specifically, the following chemicals were present in the Camp Lejeune water supply at dangerous levels.

  1. Tetrachloroethylene (PERC) - an industrial solvent commonly used in dry-cleaning, metal degreasing and chemical manufacturing. Health effects include bladder cancer and other conditions.
  2. Trichloroethylene (TCE) - a degreaser used with machinery. TCE injected or absorbed into the body through the skin causes kidney cancer, Non-Hodgkin lymphoma, cardiac problems and other cancers.
  3. Vinyl Chloride - an industrial compound used to produce PVC pipes and other plastic products. Health problems include liver cancer and other cancers.
  4. Benzene - an organic compound used in plastics manufacturing and other material production. Exposure can lead to leukemia, Non-Hodgkin lymphoma, multiple myeloma, and complications such as immune system compromise, birth defects and reproductive issues.

How do I get compensation for my water contamination-related damages?

It has already been a long and grueling battle to pursue legal justice in the case of the contaminated water supply at Camp Lejeune. Finally, it is possible for the brave individuals who chose to serve our country, military families and civilian staff members who worked at Camp Lejeune to hold the United States government accountable for their negligence and to recover compensation for the grave health damages they have suffered as a result of exposure to the contaminated water.

Originally, North Carolina’s statute of repose limited anyone from filing any tort claim after more than 10 years after the date of the incident. Because nearly 40 years had passed before the military recognized the dangerous water supply contamination, it was impossible for those affected by the contamination to seek justice.

In 2022, the Camp Lejeune Justice Act originally created in 2021 was combined with the Honoring our PACT Act and passed into federal law. This law allows anyone exposed to contaminated water for at least 30 days at Camp Lejeune between 1953 and 1987 to file a claim in order to recover compensation for the harm they experienced as a result of the toxic water
